DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES: Cylindrical isidia; black undersurface; stictic acid; compare with X. plittii, pale undersurface; X. subramigera pale undersurface, fumaroprotocetraric acid.

ECOLOGY: Common on exposed granite and sandstone throughout the US; scattered in Ohio where acidic rock outcrops are present. This species, along with X. plittii, is the most commonly encountered Xanthoparmelia in Ohio.
